They were two brothers who couldn’t have spent their lives more differently. If you don’t know yet what this project actually was going directly about, this story will be able to help you with comprehending.

Now then, in this comparison of videos, we want to give you a retrospective overview about the life of the observed pigs. For that purpose we are going to show here the most important stations of both lives with a small fraction of the developed videos.

X15 – pig in mast Jackpot (X11) – the saved one
June, the 26. in 2009: Birth of both piglets (and their siblings).
June, the 27. in 2009: Piglets just have been living for a couple of hours.
June, the 30. in 2009: X15 is castrated without any anaesthetization -
Jackpot will be castrated with anaesthetization one month later.
July, the 22. in 2009: Both piglets are separated from their mother.
X15 comes to the so-called “piglets’ breeding”, Jackpot moves to the animal sanctuary.
X15 and Jackpot at the age of 4 weeks.
August, the 26. in 2009: Even now lives of both couldn’t be more different.
September, the 10. in 2009: X15 is come from breeding to mast.
On the contrary Jackpot can move absolutely freely himself.
September, the 15. in 2009: That’s the way how lives of both looks like until now. This certainty won’t change until January.
January, the 28. in 2010: X15 is killed – Jackpot may live continuing.

In this manner it was necessary to „assist“ X15 too.

This germ is widely spread in the world and can mainly be found in countries with intensive pig breeding and fattening.

APP is transmitted via air as well as through direct contact. Infection in animals happens by droplet infection. An Infection is advantaged by housing with grids, changing coves and tracks for excrements as well as by frequent change of location of the animals within the breeding period.

‘Infection with occurs in every age; however, mainly affected are pigs aged between 2nd and 6th month. Most notably, economic losses occur in mast farms. Symptoms range from aching cough, breathing through the mouth, loss of appetite, high fever to impaired behaviour in general. Economic losses are caused by higher costs for feeding, because the animals can´t use the feed anymore as effective as before; breeding therefore is prolonged and medical therapy produces high costs.

The animals lose a lot of weight and grow slower. Their bristles are dull and matt. Opening the chest, adhesions between lung and chest wall stand out. Mostly, in the pulmonary tissue one can find some lumps, filled with matter and of different sizes. The affected areas of the lung seem to be compact and heavy and are coloured dark red.

Combatting is rather difficult, because APP rarely occurs separately on the farm; usually it comes along with another virus/germ, which hardens therapy and increases costs.

On a chinky floor above their own excrement, with way too little space, no exercise outside and wrong size of the group of pigs. That´s at least how many animal welfare activists see the case.

He is an absolute specialist concerning the holding of pigs. Professor Baumgartner is the leader of the working group “pigs” of institution for animal holding and animal protection on the university of veterinary medicine in Vienna.

He explains in the interview, what scientists think about the ordinary commercial holding of pigs. Themes are fully slatted floors, holding of sows in farrowing crates and further aspects dealing with breeding and mast of pigs.

In a second video professor Baumgartner talks detailed about the aches that farrows have while being castrated without anaesthesia.
