The weaning

Piglets spend the first few weeks of their lives with their mother, but she is kept in a so called farrowing crate. This is a kind of cage which is just big enough for her to take a few paces backwards and forwards and turning around is practically impossible. She is unable to mother her young.

What’s this like for the piglets? How long do they stay with their mother and what happens then?

We’ll be answering all these questions with our camera which will allow you to see inside a typical intensive piggery for yourself.
